Skye, birthday

Braeside B&B

Kaugemas osas paistis Storri vanamees. Kokku 6km koos rajale jõudmisega.
Väike kosk

Hommikusöögiks oli šoti eine. Selge, siis muna ja toast.

Skye`ga tutvumine võis alata. Portreest väljasõit kulges mööda asfalteeritud, kord kahe, kord üherealist teed. Vaade merele, kaugusest paistvatele mägedele ja järvedele. Päike. Esimeseks peatuseks üks väike kosk, taamal jälle Storr.

Tee üles
Storr vanamehe juurde viiva ronimisraja alguses on väike parkla, saime viimase vaba koha. Tee äär oli tühi. Alustasime tõusu, mis viis üllatavalt kiiresti kõrgele.
Storri vanamees
Storr on kivine mägi  Trotternish poolsaarel vaatega Raasay väinale. Kivisel pinnal eraldub üks kuju, vanamees. Storr on jälle üks matkajate sihtkoht.
Skyel võiks vähemale nädala veeta, et rahulikult kõigega tutvuda. Imeline vaade.Tagasi alla jõudes märkasime turismibusse (oi, kuidas ma neid ei kadesta) ja pikalt mõlemalt poolt autosid täis parkinud teed.

Paar minutit sõitu ja kaardile järgmisena märgitud punktiks Rigg vaatekoht. Kuigi terve rannik oli kauneid vaateid täis.
Lealt kose suubumine merre

Jälle paari sõiduminuti kaugusele jäi 90 m laskumisega Lealt Falls, mida loetakse üheks Ühendkuningriigi kaunimaks koseks kuigi saime selle jõudu ainult ülevalt imetleda. Järsk rada viis alla rannale aga kose juurde pääsemine tundus liiga keeruline ja ajamahukas.
Mealt Falls ja kilt rock

Järgmine kosk langes suure jõuga otse merre, 55 meetrine Mealt Falls. Sealt avanes vaade kildi kaljule, mille tardunud laava sambad liivakivist põhjal pidavat meenutama šoti rahvusriiet. Sarnasus on igaühe enda otsustada. Parkimiskohast kose juurde liikudes oli kuulda tuttavat torupilliheli, mida tekitas üksik torupillipuhuja (veidi allpool).

Tee laius
Kurv. Kiirus alla. Teadvustamine, kus on silt tasku asukohaga. Väike nähtavusega lõik, kiirendus. Kaugelt vastassuunas tulev auto.

Saime piisavalt taskutes istuda.

No ja loomulikult sealne liiklus. Väga rahulik ja viisakas. Ma jumaldan sealset üksteisele tänamiseks käe tõstmist.
Vaade Duntulum varemete juurest

Duntulumi lossist on alles ainult varemed.

Lõpuks siis suundusime India toidukohta, Taste of India. Meie kõigi jaoks esimene kokkupuude india köögiga. Kelner pidi meid natuke juhendama aga kokkuvõttes päris maitsev.

Õhtuks veel väike jalutuskäik Portree tänavatel.

Portree
19th July. I really tried to be as quiet as possible in the morning. Our room in Braeside B&B was spacious  with a thick soft carpet that made it impossible to open the bathroom door without waking others. After a short misunderstanding with the doors (yep, our room`s door was also difficult to work with) I was ready to take on the day. What a gorgeous place to spend my birthday 😊
The hiking track I had noticed the previous night was the 3km Scorrybreac circuit. This road is short enough, circular track that follows the (high) shore, turning to climb a bendy road up the hill, through a field and woods. I would have loved to start with the woods and end up by the sea but I couldn`t quite find the correct starting point for that. Serenity, sun and wonderful views. Someone was camping on the track. Would have been a beautiful spot to be if I camped. The way up the hill was a bit tiring but soon it was over and that was it. From the distance, the old man of Storr was visible. All together 6 kilometres from and back to my B&B.

Ruth served us scottish breakfast. Fine, an egg and toast then.

We were ready to continue discoverying Skye. The road leading from Portree had at times two, at times one lane. Views to the sea, mountains and tiny lakes. Sun. A tiny waterfall for our first stop, Storr also visible.
The way up

There was a small parking lot next to the track leading to the Old Man of Storr and we got the last spot. The road was empty. We begun the ascent, that was surprisingly fast and soon enough we were quite high.
Posing with the old man
Storr is a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula facing the sound of  Raasay. The Old Man is a single rock breaking away from Storr. And again, it is a destination for hikers.
I would love to spend at least a week in Skye, to have enough time to get acquainted with everything. At least a week. Gorgeous vies. On the way back down we noticed several tourist buses (I really don´t envy them) and the road was packed with cars parking in both directions.

A couple of minutes to drive and we reached the next mark on my map, Rigg viewpoint.  Although the entire coast is full of stunning views.
Lealt Falls
Another minutes away is Lealt Falls, with its 90 metres fall. It is considered one of the most beautiful falls in the UK. We got to admire its power from up. There was a steep track leading down to the beach but reaching the falls seemed to be too difficult.

Near Mealt Falls
The next waterfall descended into the sea, the 55-metre Mealt Falls. It also provided a view to Kilt Rock that is supposed to resemble scottish national clothing. Up for everyone to decide how similar it is. We could hear familiar sound of a bagpipe all the way to the parking lot.

From there we had two options, to follow the coast or drive through Quirang to the opposite coast. I had also planned to climb the Quirang, so we took that road. Oh, what a wonderful, bendy (with gorgeous views if you didn`t have to drive), steeply ascending, passenger side of the car constanty on the verge of the descending hillside, road 😊
Road to Quirang
The passing places were maked with tiny signs, but made driving a bit easier (and I still love these roads).
My drive went like this - a short straight road with some visibility and no oncoming cars, drive fast. A bend. Speed down. Making sure where the next passing place is. A tiny bit of straight road. Speed up. Oncoming car. Deciding if I can make the next passing point. The idea of backing up in that narrow road with freefall on one side did not seem that tempting.
Constant ascent up the hill until we had unnoticeably reached the top. All the possible parking spots were occupied :( I couldn`t block the road. Nor park in a passing place. So Quirang will have to  wait for the next time. It will definitely come ;)
Pea and mint soup

The road turned down the hill. We reached Uig. Another sharp turn, enough times waiting in passing places and then a bit calmer road towards  Edibane Inn where I had decided to eat lunch. They offer good soups as I have read. I chose the surprisingly tasty (I detest pea soups) pea and mint puree soup.
Standing stone in Dunvegan
For dessert I though to visit a cafe in Dunvegan. When reaching it I noticed a graveyard so I decided to see that first after parking our car. Reaching it I noticed a standing stone on a hill. Whenever possible I try to find all the stone circles, burial sites and standing stones when travelling. I do that at home naturally. Scotland`s main land is not tha blessed with these so I didn´t have any hopes of finding one. But back home I couldn`t find any information about this stone. Did the residents put it there?

In Dunvegan we visited a handicarf fair. We searched for a bakery I had seen online but after not finding it we decided on Jann`s cakes. We made our desicion based on appearance chose chocolate cupcakes. Eww that choclaty chocolate on top. Ewwwww.
Dunvegan castle
Dunvegan caste that originates from the 13th century but got its present look in the 19th century is about a mile from the village. It was a bit problematic to find a parking sport but challenges are only there to overcome them, right?  Dunvegan still belongs to the clan of   MacLeodi. Inside, as usual, we got to see some beautiful rooms. Outside we could walk in the gardens.

The day had reached its evening. To drive back, we again had two options. Straight to Portree or take a longer drive, follow the coast and take the much more challenging road. As I had discarded Duntulum castle`s ruing in favour of Quirang, is gave us the chance to go there. The drive to Duntulum had much more traffic and we had plenty of chances to wait in the passing places.

And that traffic. Very calm and polite. I adore the custom to thank people who let you pass.

Duntulum castle ruins
The former Duntulum castle is now in ruins. It was built in the 14th century and neglected three centuries later. Now it is isolated with a fence but still it had people on both sides. The drive back to our B&B allowed to see the other side of Storr.
Some tasty Indian food
When trying to find somewhere to eat, we discovered every restaurant, cafe or pub was full. Eventually we ended up in Taste of India. It was the first contact with Indian cuisine for all of us. The waiter had to help us a bit but all in all, really tasty.

And to end the day, I wandered the streets of Portee once more.

Šotimaa, Fort Augustus -> Skye

Loch Ness
18.07 Mõnikord on ajavahe päris tore.

Igaks juhuks.

Jalasirutuse tegime Kintaili Viie Õe jalamil, kust sai alguse üks matkarada *jäi ootama*. Viis Õde on 8 kilomeetrine mäeahelik viie eristuva tipuga, millest kolm on Munrod (üle 3000 jala/914m). Viie Õe territoorium peidab ühte Suurbritannia kõrgemat koske, Glomach`i.

Edasitee Skye suunas kulges natuke parema nähtavusega teel. Ei, mulle tegelikult väga meeldib seal sõita. Nii suurtel kui kitsastel teedel. Skye külastamine on olnud sihiks juba pikka aega.

Fairy Pools
Fairy Pools, turismimagnet, on looduslik kosk Brittle mäeorus. Rada on täiesti olemas ja eksimisvõimalus puudub. Legend lubab 7 sekundit pea külma vee all hoidjatele igavest noorust.
Inimeste massid vees suplemas ning mõlemas suunas liikumas ja päikesepaistet nautimas (Šotimaal pidi ju vahetpidamata sadama ;) )Loomulikult saab sealt alguse üks Cuillini mägedesse viiv rada.

Huvitaval kombel ei nautinud mu vanemad väikese tõusuga tagasiteed auto juude.

Portree
Edasi liikudes möödusime Sligachani vanast sillast ning õhtuks viis meid tee Skye suurimasse linna, Portree`sse. Portree elanike arv jääb 2300 kanti. Väga mõnus, värvikirev sadamalinn.
Beef&ale pie
Kaheks järgmiseks ööks Braeside B&B. Ennast sisse seadnud käisime jalutamas.
Õhtusöögiks sain tohutu beef ale piruka Portree Central restoranis.

18th July. Sometimes the time difference is quite nice. Specially if you are used to waking before 7am and in Scotland it means before 5am. I would have used the alarm but this made waking that much easier. I love to wonder early in the morning, enjoying silence and the lack of people so I made my way to Fort Augustus.
Fort Augustus
The track led me across a golf field where I managed to surprise several hares. I have come to think there are many sheep in Ireland and highland cattle in Scotland but Fort Augustus waited me with loads of hares.

No luck with spotting Nessie this time either. I did hope that early in the morning, in fog, I would see her head.

We had to order our cooked breakfast the previous night. I don`t quite prefer irish/scottish/english/welsh *the bloody difference?* breakfast if there are other options so I chose a boiled egg, soliders and salmon. Oh, that delicious salmon. Andtoast. We could also choose from cereals, fruit, juice.

Back to our Focus, with my irreplaceable Tom and towards Skye. First I refueled. Just in case.

Our first stop was at the base of the Five Sisters of Kintail where a hiking track stayed waiting for next time. the Five Sisters are a high ridge of about 8 kilometres with 5 distinctly pointed summits, three of which are Munros (above 3000 ft). The Five Sisters also hide one of the highest waterfalls in Great Britain, the Falls of Glomach.

Eas-nan-Arm
A couple of minutes` drive away is Eas-nan-Arm bridge. Historically important landmark where jacobites had one of their first oppositions with the Goverment forces. After reading   Outlander  series by Diana Gabaldon*I only liked the first book*, the book that found its way to my life after planning our Scotland trip, I recognised to many names and places when reading about the history of the places we visited.
Eilean Donan
And then Eilean Donan, probably the most photographed sight in Scotland and quite possible Great Britan. It belonged to the clan Mackenzie and their allies clan Macrae in the 13th century. This time we only enjoyed the outside. Mackenzie`s connection to the jacobites led to destruction of the castle. Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the ruins in 1911 and dedicated the next 20 years to reconstructiont castle.

Plockton
And then, oh the familiar single-track roads, of course with passing places, bendy, with rises and falls, bodrered with bushes, with zero visibility roads :) that led to fishinga village called Plockton that is familiar for Hamish Macbeth viewers. Sunshine, palm trees, what else to expect from summer?
Fish&chips
For lunch we visited Plockton Inn, compulsory fish&chips for my parents and I tried another dish from my Scottish food check-list: cullen skink (quite tasty thick soup with haddock, potato and onions). Usually we were served soups with a bun and butter.

The onwards road to Skye had slightly better visibility. No, seriously, I really enjoy driving there. Wide roads, narrow roads. Skye had been one of my dream destinations for quite some time.

The track to Fairy Pools
Skye with its 1656 km² is the biggest island of the Inner Hebrides and the second largest island of Scotland after Lewis&Harrise. It was not untouched by the jacobite uprising.

Its coastline is a series of peninsulas and bays radiating out from a centre dominated by the Cuillin hills where we also made our way. We must have found the last parking pace in the tiny lot in the woods. Of course people parked on the roads also. That would have meant turning around in that narrow road. An easy walk down the hill and then up towards Fairy Pools.

Fairy Pools
Fairy Pools, a tourist magent, is a natural falls in the Glen of Brittle. It has a decent track and no chance of getting lost. The legend promises eternal youth to people who hold their heads under water for 7 seconds. Numerous people taking a bath, walking both directions and enjoying sunshine. (Wasn`t it supposed to constantly rain in Scotland? ;) )And naturally a hiking track to Cuillin hills starts from there. For some reason my parents didn`t enjoy the slightly uphill walk back to our car.
Sligachan old bridge
Moving forward we stopped at Sligachan old bridge and then moved on to the biggest town in Skye, Portree.

Portree
Portree has the population of about 2300 people. It is a charming, vibrant town. For next two night we were to stay at Braeside B&B.

Beef and ale pie
Settling ourselves in, we took a walk and had our dinner in Portree Central Restaurant. I chose (the enormous) beef and ale pie.

After dinner I left my parents to rest and wondered by myself. I discovered a walking path and a falls. And then trusted my ears that led me to bagpipers rehearsing. That sight I didn`t want to enjoy alone so I called my parents to join me.
Bagpipers
