Septembri viimase nädalavahetuse veetsin tutvudes naaberriigi pealinna
Riiaga. Meie mini-trip sai alguse laupäeval umbes poole üheteistkümne paiku ning esimeseks sihtpunktiks
Jurmalas asuv
Livu veepark.

|
Riia |
Seejärel suundusime tagasi Riiga ning tegime check-in`i
Rixwell hotelli.
|
Alberta Iela |
Suund tagasi Riia vanalinna. Jätsime auto parkimismajja. Esimesena juugendstiilis
Alberta Iela (tänav). Tundsin päikesest tohutult puudust. Mitte ainult seal vaid terve päev. Päike (saime paar hetke nautida 5nda kilomeetri lõpus kui kokku läbisime 6.7 km) pani majad hoopis teistmoodi särama. Alberta Iela nagu enamik hooneid Riia vanalinnas on lihtsalt võrratu. Alberta Iela sai oma nime Riia asustaja (1201. a)
Piiskop Alberti järgi. Enamik hoonete arhitekt oli
Mikhail Einstein 20. sajandi alguses.
|
Riia Kristuse Sündimise katedraal |
Varsti jäi kaugelt silma kuldne läige pargipuude vahelt. Selgus, et tegemist oli
Riia Kristuse Sündimise katedraali kuplitega. Katedraal on ehitatud aastatel 1876-1883 neo-bütsantsi stiilis, arhitektideks Nikolai Chagin ja Robert Pflug. See on suurim õigeusu kirik Baltikumis.
|
Vabadussammas |
Katedraali juurest viis tee 42 meetrise
Vabadussambani, mis on ehitatud meenutamaks 1935. aastal Läti Vabadussõjas langenuid.
|
Riia |
Riia vanalinn on Tallinnaga väga sarnane. Väga armas ja korras hoitud. Täis kirikuid ja ajalugu.
|
Bremeni linna moosekandid |
|
Mustpeade maja |
Kiriku vahetusse lähedusse jääb
Mustpeade maja. Algupäraselt ehitatud 14. sajandi alguses vallalistele saksa kaupmeestele Riias. Praegusel kujul taastatud `90 ndate lõpus. Seal tundsin eriti päikesest puudust. Selle asemel üks pilv teises kinni.
Vanalinna keskel kõrgub üks Läti tuntum sümbol,
Riia Toomkirik, pärinedes 13. sajandist. Riia Toomkirikut peetakse Baltimaade suurimaks keskaegseks kirikuks.
Proovisime üles leida Riia kitsaima tänava, Rozena Iela. Pettumus. Täielik pettumus, ei ulatanud kätega tänavat ääristavaid maju puudutama. Kitsas peaks ikka kitsas olema.
|
Kolm venda |
Toomikiriku juurest seadsime sammud
Kolme Venna poole. Käisime neid ka eelmisel õhtul vaatamas. Päike??? Kolm venda on toredad keskaegsed hooned, mis kolmekesi moodustavad Riia vanima elumajade kompleksi. Vanim pärit 15. sajandist ning teised 17. sajandist.
|
Kassimaja |
Tänavad täis kauneid
juugendstiilis ehitisi juhatasid meid suure kollase hooneni, millel nimeks
Kassimaja. Pärit on see 1909. aastast ning arhitektiks Friedrich Scheffel. Kahte torni kaunistavad küürus seljaga kassid.
|
Riia |
Miks nad seal on, räägivad legendid erinevalt.
|
Rootsi värav |
Väikese jalgsi ringkäigu lõpetas
Rootsi värav, siis väike sõit
Riia Mootorimuuseum. Sobib autohuvilistele :)
|
Mootorimuuseum, Inetu Pardipoeg |
Riia on armas pealinn.
We spent the last weekend of September in Latvia`s capital,
Riga. My first time there. Our mini-trip started on Saturday morning at around 10:30 am and our first destination was
Livu waterpark in
Jurmala. The drive took just above three hours but passed surprisingly fast. Soon we reached the bridge leading to Jurmala having 2 euro entrance fee (if you don`t want to pay much more to the police later on).
Livu waterpark was partly under maintenance and the tubes were closed :( We got to visit all the pools and saunas but I would have loved to try the tubes. Guess that`s for nex time.

Riga at night |
|
Seafood pasta, Lighthouse |
We ate dinner in
Lighthouse. I love pasta. And if it is served with seafood, then it`s a definite choice to try. The portion was relatively small but really tasty. But the chocolate fondant with rasberry sorbet and fresh berries was to die for.
|
Funny statue in Riga |
After dinner we headed back to Riga and checked-in to
Rixwell. Backing to our parking space (luckily I wasn`t driving, otherwise we would have parked in the street) was a total mystery and exact science. Cosy and clean room. The walls were not the thickest as it turned out later but fortunately out neighbours were only talking not shouting as I have came across from time to time. After a short refreshening we took an evening walk in Riga.
Sunday started quietly. As always, it was a bit difficult for me to sleep in a strage place, though not impossible. We had breakfast at our hotel, nice buffet with quite varied options.
|
Alberta Iela |
Back to Riga`s Old Town. We left our car in a parking house and headed to
Alberta Iela famous for its Art Nouveau buildings. I missed the sun tremendeously. Not only there but the whole day. Sun (we got a glimpse of it at the end of 5th km and we walked 6.7km) brightened up the houses so much. Alberta Iela as most of buildings in Riga are magnificent and simply beautiful. Alberta Iela was named after the founder of Riga (year 1201)
Bishop Albert. Many of the buildings were designed by
Mikhail Einstein at the beginning of the 20th century.
|
Freedom Monument |
Soon I saw a glitter of gold between the trees. It tourned out to be
The Nativity of Christ Cathedral of Riga. They didn`t have gold to coat all the domes though ;) The Catherdal was built between 1876 to 1883 in a Neo-Byzantine style and designed by Nikolai Chagin and Robert Pflug. It is the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic provinces.
From the Cathedral we reached the
Freedom Monument, a monument build honouring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). The monument is 42m hight and was built in 1935.
|
Bremen Town Musicians |
Riga`s Old Town is very similar to Tallinn`s. Very cute, well preserved and clean. Full of churches and history.
The first mentioning of
St. Peter`s Church dates back to 1209. The tower has a great view of the town apparently but due to my knee I didn`t want to take the climb. The weather wouldn`t have been suitable either.
Next to the Church
Bremen Town Musicans have found their place. The Musicans look though a iron window since 1990. It was created by Bremen artist Krista
Baumgaertel.
|
House of the Blackheads |
Near St. Peter`s Church is
House of the Blackheads originally built at the beginnig of the 14th century for the Brotherhood of Blackeads, unmarried German merchants in Riga. It was pombed to the ground during WWII and was rebuilt at the end of 1990s. There I especially missed the sun. One cloud reached out to another. Sad.
The center of Riga is one of the most recognizable symbols of Latvia,
Riga Cathedral. Originating from the 13th century. Riga Cathedral is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states.
|
The Three Brothers |
We tried to locate the narrowest street in Riga, Rozena Iela. Total dissapointment. As hard as I tried, didn`t manage to touch both sides of the street with my hands.
From Riga Cathedral to
The Three Brothers. We went to see them the previous night also but then it was dark. The Three Brothers are considered the oldest dwelling houses in Riga. The oldest from the 15th and the others from the 17th century.
|
Cat House |
Streets full of gorgeous Art Nouveau buildings led us to a huge bright yellow building,
Cat House. It is originated from 1909 and was designed by Friedrich Scheffel. Its two turrets are decorated by two angry cats. The building has several legends but they all say something about a quirrel and cats have their bottoms towards the rivals.

Riga |
Our lovely walk ended near the
Swedish Gate. Then a short drive to
Riga Motor Museum. Recommended to all interested in cars :)
|
Riga Moto Museum |
Riga is a lovely city, if possible I recommend to visit. Though for me not even close to GB and Ireland. Scotland planned for next summer :) Third time for me.
