Morro Bay - San Francisco 11.08

11.08 Hommiku veetsin järjekordselt hülgeid jälgides. Hommikusöök sama, mis eelmisel päeval ning vajadus see oma tuppa toimetada. Enne edasisõitu tegime toiduvarude kogumise peatuse Albertsonis. 

Õhtuks oli plaan jõuda tagasi reisi alguspunkti, San Franciscosse. Selleks oli kolm peamist võimalust: kasutada maatneed 101, kiirteed 5 või kulgeda mööda maalilist rannaäärt maanteel 1. Hmm? 😏

Esimese peatuse tegin uuesti elevanthüljeste juures. No need võimsad loomad on seal ja suure tõenäosusega ma sinna tagasi enam ei satu. Otsest kiiret ka ei olnud.

Sõit kulges mööda rannikut, tee oli kurviline ja käänuline. Ühele poole jäid mägine sisemaa ning avatud väljad, teisel pool oli teoreetiliselt ookean, mis aga oli enamasti kaetud paksu udulooriga.

McWay kosk

Udust kerkis mingi huvitav valge .. mägi. Sellel on kindlasti nimi ka aga jäi teadmata.

Järgmise peatuse tegime 24-meetrise McWay kose imetlemiseks. Kõrgus ise ei olegi midagi erilist, kuid asukoht on super. Veejuga langeb ookeani ääres olevale eraldatud liivarannale.

Olin enne uurinud, et parkimine on tasuline kuid tee ääres on paar kohta, mis on parimiseks piisavalt laiad. Õnneks ruumi oli, kuigi enamik keeras peateelt parkla suunas. Parkimine 10$, selleks et teha alla 500meetrine jalutuskäik😶

Bixby sild

1932 aastal ehitatud 110m pikkune ja 85m kõrge Bixby sild on üks pildistatumaid sildu Californias. Meil õnnestus imetleda sellest tervelt .. 10 meetrit? 😁 Roberto ütles, et temale avanes aasta tagasi täpselt sama vaatepilt. Kusjuures pildistajaid oli tohutust udust hoolimata mitmeid.

Kevadeti saab Garrapata rannas imetleda lumivalget õiteilu, kui avanevad sajad kallad. Meie sattusime kallade orgu augustis, kuid otsustasin rannaäärse lühikese raja siiski läbi käia.

Parkimiskohast kulges rada otse alla randa ning paremale, oru poole, kuhu mina suundusin. Eksimisvõimalust ei olnud.

Orgu jõudmiseks tuli natuke ronida. Mitte midagi võimatut, kuigi niiskus tegi pinnase libedaks. Minu ees liikus üks aasiamaade välimusega pere, labidas käes😶Laipa kaasas ei paistnud olevat. Kas tõesti kavatsesid nad mõne taime kaasa võtta? Minu rõõmuks leidsin rohelusest üksikuid õisi.

Tagasi auto juurde liikusin mööda randa. Jätkuvalt udu. Kuidagi äärmiselt mõnus jalutuskäik.

San Francisco

Esialgu oli veel mõte Santa Cruzis väike peatus teha, kuid sinna jõudes oli päääris korralik ummik, mis viis plaanid veidi sassi, aeg oli juba hiline ja soovisin Siscos ka jalutama jõuda nii et kokkuvõttes piirdusime üknes sellest armsast linnast läbisõiduga.

Kui Sa lähed San Franciscosse, kanna mõnda õit juustes.. nagu laulis Scott McKenzie. Ja siis olime ringiga tagasi seal, kust alustasime. Madalate majade rivid. Kõrgemad majad.

Linna sissesõit ei tekitanud enam mingeid emotsioone. Ja siis muutus tee huvitavaks. San Francisco maastik on väga künklik, teed kulgevad muudkui üles ja alla, tõus on üpris korralik. Kõige põnevam ongi see, et mäkketõusu (ja see on ikka tunduvalt järsem, kui Tallinnas olev Tartu maantee) lõpus on ristmik. Kust Sul on kohustus mööda lasta see, kes esimesena ristil. Kui just foori ei ole. Seekord olin äärmiselt õnnelik, et saime automaadi. Juba sellepärast, et olin sunnitud telefoniga sõitma.

Õhtusöök Asian Boxis

Meie viimane majutus sellel reisil oli Town House Motel, klassikaline kahekordne motell. Suurepärane asukoht Lombard tänaval, tasuta parkimise (oh seda kitsast parkimisala) ja hommikusöögiga. Registreerusime sisse ning suundusime õhtusöögile.

Lombard Street

Kodus olin välja otsinud toidukoha nimega Pacific Catch aga kohale jõudes oli see inimesi täis ning oodata me ei tahtnud. Kõrval majas asub aasia kiirtoidu toidukoht Asian Box, tõeliselt maitsev toit ning väga hea hind.

Õhtu lõpetuseks ja toidu seedimiseks üks reibas ülesmäkke kõnd eesmärgiks heita pilk kuulsale käänulisele Lombard tänavale, meie majutusest ca 800m. Tee tõusis järjest kõrgemale, imestasin kuidas autod pargivad.

Lõpuks avaneski meie ees siksakne tänav, kus autod ootavad järjekorras, et lihtsalt alla sõita (meil ikka sama plaan). Aastas kasutab seda tänavat sõiduks ca 2 miljonit inimest. Isa ei uskunud mind, et Alcatraz kaldale nii lähedal asub.

Lombardi keskele on isutatud taimed, mis tegelikult varjavad tee. Kui pilti tehes autosid teel poleks olnud, ei saakski tänava kulgemisest aru. Selle ääres elavad inimesed kindlasti turistide hordide üle ei rõõmusta. Lugesin veel, et Siscol on plaan allasõitmine maksuliseks teha.

Kuldvärava sild

Saatsin vanemad tagasi majutusse ning tegin õhtu lõpetuseks veel väikese jalutuskäigu.

11th August. I spent my morning admiring the seals once more. The breakfast was the same as the previous day and of course we had to carry it to our room. Before heading to the road, we bought our lunches and some snacks from Albertsons.


At the end of the day we were supposed to finish our journey from where it began, San Francisco. We had three main options for that: highway 101, highway 5 or the picturesque coastal road 1.  Hmm? 😏

First, I just had to see the elephant seals again. They are such magnificent animals and I will probably never go there again so I took my time.

The road was bordered by the hills and fields from one side and the ocean from the other. Theoretically. The ocean was covered in mist most of the way.

McWay Falls

There was an interesting white rocky island, but I don`t know its name.

We took the next stop to admire the 24-metre high McWay Falls. The hight itself is not that special, but it's location is wonderful. The water runs down from a cliff to a remote sandy beach.

I had found out beforehand that we'd have to pay for parking, but it is free to use the roadside and it is wider. We found a free spot, but most of the cars still used the car park. The parking cost 10$ just to take a 500-metre walk😶

Bixby Bridge

The 110-metre long and 85-metre high Bixby Bridge that was built in 1932, is one of the most photographed bridges in Califronia. We got the chance to admire the whole.. 10 metres of it 😁 Roberto told me later that he was able to see just as much the previous summer. But despite the fog, there were plenty of people taking photos.

Garrapata beach offers a stunning view of calla lilies in spring. We reached the Valley of Callas in August, but I still wanted to take the short coastal walk.

There were two tracks from the roadisde parking spaces. One led down to the sandy beach and the other to the valley. No possibility to get lost.

I had to climb a bit to reach the valley and the moisture made it slightly slippery. There was an Asian family walking in front of me, carrying a spade. I didn't see them carrying a body. Were they really going to take a plant with them? To my delight, I actually found a couple of callas.


I took the other track back to our car, the one on the beach. Still foggy. But such a lovely walk.

San Francisco

I had intended to visit the charming Santa Cruz but driving there we were caught in a looong traffic jam, that messed up our plans quite a lot. It was already getting late and I wanted to have enough time to take a walk in San Francisco in the evening so we did waste our time, just drove through the city and headed on.

If You're going to San Francisco, make sure to wear some flowers in your hair..  as Scott McKenzie used to sing. And then we were back from where we started our journey from. Low lines of houses. Higher houses.

Reaching the city was nothing special, consdering more than 850K people live there. Then the road got interesting 😊 San Francisco is very hilly, the roads go up and down. Perhaps the most interesting part of the uphill drive is the crossroad at the end of it, making you to stop. This time I was sooo happy to have an automatic car, I usually drive a manual.
Our last accommodation during our journey was Town House Motel, a classical-looking low, long motel. It is located perfectly in the Lombard Street, they offer free parking and complimentary breakfast. We checked in and went to eat. 

Lombard St

At home I had found a diner called Pacific Catch, but when we got there, it was packed and we really didn`t feel like waiting so we went next door to the Asian fast food place, Asian Box, really good food and ok prices.

To help the digestion process, we took the uphill walk to the famous Lombard Street, one of the crookedest streets in the world. It was just 800metres from our motel. The road went higher and higher. I was amazed how the cars park there.

And at last we reached the zik-zak Lombard St, where people wait in line (so would we) to drive down and take the pinpoint turns. More than 2 million people use that road every year.
My father didn`t believe me, when I pointed Alcatraz, because it is so close to the shore. Different flowers are planted in the middle of the street, making it impossible to see without the cars actually not driving down. I bet the people living next to the street are not too happy about the tourists constantly walking there and looking at the buildings. I also read, that Sisco wants to charge money for driving down in the future.

I led my parents back to our motel and took a nice walk to end the day.
